IN MEMORIAM

Meyrl A. Hatch

October 18, 1925 – January 7, 2009

Meyrl HatchMeyrl moved to the Town of Beamsville in the summer of 1940 with her parents and 3 sisters. She started her love of baking with her mother and this continued into a career when she went to work for Brown’s Bakery in Beamsville and later when she was employed at Eaton’s in downtown Hamilton at the lunch counter. Following her marriage to Jim she developed a following in town for her fancy sandwiches and cookies, birthday cakes and wedding cakes and this small business eventually included catering to small parties and monthly dinners for some of the service clubs in the area.

Meyrl’s first involvement with the Lincoln Agricultural Society or the Beamsville Fair was as an exhibitor in the home-craft area especially in the baking classes. She started to volunteer with the Board in the mid seventies and took classes to be a judge at other fairs in the early days of her involvement. About 1977, when the new building for the grandstand was built, the board started catering, under Meyrl’s direction to the functions that the room under the grandstand was rented out for. Many weddings and dinner/dances saw her cherry cheesecake or lemon dessert as the final touch to their dining experience. Meyrl was always proud to be able to say that between 1977 and the early 1990’s when the board gave up the catering that this small but dedicated group with whom she worked had generated nearly $50,000.00 as their contribution to the fair grounds.

Meyrl continually had great stories to tell of the days during fairs when she was working with WAVES serving dinners under the old grandstand, or running lunches and refreshments around to the people manning the gates or attending the annual convention in Toronto for the fair boards in Ontario. She really enjoyed the “fun” that was the fair at that time and the friendship of the other hardworking volunteers.

Being involved with the Beamsville Fair was a highlight of Meyrl’s community involvement in the town she loved to live in.
