FLOWERS AND PLANTS

Chair: Cathy Muzyka (905)643-2648

COMMITTEE: Erika Cronin, Bev Davies, Sue Gemmill, Sharon McMaster, Joan Snow

  • All flower exhibits must be grown by home gardeners except for arrangements, where flowers may come from any source.
  • Potted plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for at least two months prior to the Fair. Buds showing colour are considered in bloom.
  • Containers: Use discretion about size, i.e. not overly large. Be sure containers for cut flowers are stable – not easily tipped. Small containers can be supplied.
  • Conditioning Technique: Use a sharp knife, cut flower stems on a diagonal to encourage upward flow of water. Hammer ends of woody materials so water may be absorbed easily. Char 2” at stem end of plants with milk sap (poinsettias, poppies, milkweed, etc.).This seals juices in but allows water to rest. Deadhead and remove any dead leaves from your entry. Ideally, cut flowers in early morning and stand them immediately in a bucket of tepid water for a few hours or overnight in a cool place. Flowers such as tulips, need to be wrapped snugly in newspaper as they have a tendency to develop unwanted curves. If floral foam or oasis is used be sure to drop it in a large container of lukewarm water. In one minute the oasis will be thoroughly soaked.
